Welcome to Laboratory Equipment’s first issue of 2019! We’re excited to bring you a bigger, better publication this year, encompassing not only Laboratory Equipment’s 50+ year history of discovery and technology but the latest news and content from our sister lab brands.
This issue covers some of the most exciting new products and discoveries in
the lab community. Our cover story highlights the latest innovations in “green”
chemistry, with scientists harnessing the power of new techniques to create cleaner,
more easily accessible energy solutions.
We also explore the necessity to gain control and consistency over a facility’s
instruments by discussing optofluidics, and the best way to select the right valves
for your lab’s needs. We also focus on some of the newest instrumentation and tools
in the field of CRISPR, and the future of the gene editing industry. Additionally,
the Internet of Things is gaining steam in today’s world, and lab managers must
evaluate whether their laboratory information management systems and electronic
lab notebooks are up to the task.
You’ll notice a special ALN section which addresses how adopting best practices
can improve consistency and lead to more reliable results when dealing with animal
research. Another article discusses how new transparency initiatives in research will
increase public awareness and promote open dialogue. Another new feature is a
behind-the-scenes look at some of the most innovative and groundbreaking vivarium
facilities around the country.
Laboratory Design has also integrated into Laboratory Equipment, offering
our readers a view of the lab as a whole. In this issue, we’ll look at how STEM
buildings foster innovation by incorporating collaborative, flexible spaces—where
researchers and students can not only perform their work but meet with each other
to talk, brainstorm and relax.
Another article in our new Laboratory Design section examines how today’s lab
facilities need to optimize occupants’ health, wellness and safety. We also feature
exciting new and renovated lab projects in each issue—contact us and let us know
This year will see the return of columns that highlight the voices of the Laboratory
Equipment community—Experts Explain, where those in the know share insight
about the instruments, systems and products vital to labs all over the world; and
Last Word, which provides a forum for our readers to talk about causes and
concerns close to their hearts.
We have also added exciting new departments for 2019—BioTech Briefs, which
summarizes the latest news and discoveries from the bioscience world; In the Lab:
Voices, where we’ll speak to research leaders about what the future holds; Lab
Wear, which offers a fun look at workplace wear; and Lab Quiz, which will test
your knowledge about the history behind the evolution of the
As always, we want to hear from our community! Share your
expert input and tell us about your research or what you’re
seeing in terms of the future of labs and lab equipment. Here’s
to a great 2019!
